Dr. Robert Bell was a prominent Canadian geologist and surveyor, Cochrane his engineering assistant. They pair conducted track surveys during their 1877–1879 explorations of the Churchill and Nelson River basins in northeastern Manitoba. Their work contributed to an understanding of the geography of the area as well as an understanding of the ancient rocks of the Canadian Shield.
