TRUSLER, Rev. John (ed.)
Title continues: "in a Series of Engravings: with Descriptions, and A Comment on Their Moral Tendency, by the Rev. John Trusler. To Which are Added, Anecdotes of the Author and His Works, by J. Hogarth and J. Nichols." As a clergyman, Rev. John Trusler was probably fascinated by Hogarth's combination of art and morality. He therefore compiled this collection of engravings showcasing the unparalleled talent of the renowned 18th-century artist. For each engraving, Trusler provided commentary explaining the satirical and moralistic themes. The result is a comical look at British society in the 1700s that's entertaining to this very day. A Midnight Modern Conversation (Vol. I opposite p. 57) may look like a few parties you attended yourself.
