The Compleat Angler was first published in 1653 by Richard Marriot in London. Walton's work is still recognized as a celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse. The English artist Edmund Hort New (1871-1931) was commissioned by the Bodley Head to work on many critically acclaimed editions of books. Besides The Compleat Angler, he also illustrated The Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White.
