Linus W. Miller, a 22-year-old American lawyer, was transported to Van Dieman's Land as a state prisoner after becoming involved in the 1837 Canadian rebellion. He arrived on the Canton in Hobart Town in 1840 but returned to the US after his pardon and wrote this book. Provides an in-person account of the convict system in Australia and Tasmania.
