Formed in 1635, the Académie française is responsible for all official matters pertaining to matters regarding the French language. This 1718 edition is the second complete dictionary of the French language ever officially produced by the academy. Only eight editions have ever been completed; however, the academy continues to work on the 9th edition today. This beautiful set of folios is both a useful reference and a historical document of significance to anyone studying the history and development of the French language in the modern era.

    2 vols. vol. 1, A-L: [13], 922 p. vol. 2, M-Z: 820 p. 41 cm folios. Frontispiece engraving in vol. 1 with smaller engravings adorning the title pages in both volumes. Full leather with gilt and raised bands on spine and gilt and an impressed design around outsides of boards. Some tearing and wearing to binding, mostly at corners of boards and spine ends. A couple of the cords can be seen through the hinges at the raised bands. Vol. II has large scuff on front board but all boards rubbed. Corners worn. Armorial bookplates for "B.E.R." on the front pastedown endpapers of each volume. Torn endpaper at the back of vol. 2.
