Marine Painting

MAY, Walter W.

Regular price $40.00 Sale

May was a marine painter in oil and watercolour who served in the British Navy from 1850 to 1870, retiring as captain. He exhibited from 1859, mainly coastal and shipping subjects in England, France, Holland and Norway. His work is in the tradition of E.W. Cooke and C. Stanfield and, although not particularly original, is always competent and pleasing. Lovely seascapes show fishing boats, beaches, piers, sailing ships, barges, the Thames estuary. Four pages of Cassell advertising at rear.
