The Present State of Europe
Title continues: "Explaining the Interests, Connections, Political and Commercial Views of Several Powers, Comprehending Also a Clear and Concise History of each Country, so far as is nessesary to show the Nature of their Present Constitutions." Campbell's book was first published as a single text in 1750, largely reprinted from its original periodical run in The Museum. The Political State of Europe went through six editions in his lifetime and procured him a continental reputation. It consisted of summaries of the history of the most prominent European states, with remarks on their international relations, and on the policy of their rulers and governments, sometimes displaying considerable acumen.
