New System of Measuring All Bodies, Segments, Frusta and Ungulae of Such Bodies by One and the Same Rule","description":"\u003cp\u003eCharles Baillargé (1826-1906) was a Quebec architect, surveyor, civil engineer, and author. Coming from an illustrious line of sculptors, painters, and architects, it was natural for him to choose architecture as a profession. In the 1850s, he drew inspiration from the fashionable Greek Revival style, examples of which he found in British and American publications. Soon he had a thriving practice in Quebec City and the surrounding area. When Laval was founded, he had the opportunity to demonstrate his immense knowledge of civil engineering and designed two large buildings for the university, the boarding school and main pavilion. The latter, 80 ft. high, was the first building in Quebec City to be reinforced with iron columns. Baillargé submitted a Neo-Classical design for Canada's Parliament Buildings, which was turned down in favour of the Neo-Gothic design we have today, but he was still hired to oversee the building process. In his spare time he lectured on science and mathematics to large crowds. Eventually he developed a system that made it possible to calculate the volume of all shapes found in nature. Useful to workers and artisans, this Stereometric Chart won medals, prizes and diplomas from scientific societies throughout the world. The chart is a set of 200 wooden models comprising all known geometric shapes, with their segments and sections, and a treatise explaining the formula.
