Abraham (or Abram) Nelles (1805-1884) was a Church of England clergyman and missionary to the Six Nations. Nelles was principal of the Mohawk Institute, a day-school operated by the New England Company for \"Indian\" students. Nelles first used his knowledge of the Mohawk language to publish in 1839 a hymnal entitled \"A collection of psalms and hymns, in the Mohawk language, for the use of the Six Nations Indians.\" This translation project, also published in Hamilton, dates to a few years later. He is buried in the graveyard of the Mohawk Church. Interestingly, two individuls named \"Powless\" are also buried there, so James was probably one of his parishioners.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"NELLES, The Rev.
