The DNB states that the Shorton revised edition appeared in 1813. The original compiler, Barclay, was a clergyman, teacher, and lexicographer whose fame really rests on the publication of this dictionary. First published in 1774, it went through at least 23 reprints and editions by 1848. Despite its title, the work took in only a selection of English vocabulary. Stress points in words are marked and synonyms noted. Barclay was the first English language lexicographer to attempt to add the latter. In addition, the reader is provided with information more usually found in an encyclopaedia ie. Baptism - we are informed that "Baptism is practised by all professions of the Christian religion except Quakers." Place names are also included eg. Lubeck is "a celebrated sea-port of Holstein, in Lower Saxony." The author's interest in linguistic matters is evidenced by the inclusion of an article on the origin of language by Abbot Anselm and by a series of articles on history, grammar, pronunciation, and orthography in English. The book served as an important means of self-education.
