SS Noronic was a passenger ship that was destroyed by fire in Toronto Harbour in September 1949 with the loss of at least 118 lives. The fire started in a linen closet and may have been caused by the careless dropping of a cigarette. The ship's crew fled the ship, without awakening the passengers or calling the fire department, and passengers had not been informed of evacuation routes or procedures. The design of the ship was also at fault, with interiors lined in oiled wood instead of fireproof material, exits located on one deck only instead of all five, and none of the ship's fire hoses were in working order. Ann Christine Upward, a waitress on board, was born in Orillia March 16, 1946. She was married or widowed at the time of the disaster. Legal papers in this collection pertain to her claim for property loss against Canada Steamship Lines. Her list of lost belongings is included, listing everything from a blue silk garter belt to her wedding photo. She presented a claim for $2088.53. At the time of the claim, Mrs. Upward lived at 69 Beaconsfield Avenue, London, Ontario. Her claim was one of about 370 against Canada Steamship Lines, including death, personal injury and property loss. She appeared at a hearing in Cleveland, Ohio September 11, 1952. As well as losing her belongings, Upward walked in hot cinders in bare feet, suffered infections to her hands, and fell into the water while making her escape. Damage suits for Noronic were settled for just over $2 million.
