The Tunnel in the story is the work of William Frederick Kohler, a professor of history at an unnamed university in the American Midwest. As he writes an autobiographical introduction to his latest book, Kohler also starts digging a tunnel out from the basement of his house, the tunnel representing Kohler's excavation into his own life. One of the most complex, challenging books published in English in the 1990s, but one that earned Gass the American Book Award of 1996.
