An eye surgeon at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia from 1844 to 1854, Fitzwilliam Sargent later settled in Europe with his family. Sargent was a skilled medical illustrator, possibly drawing the illustrations for this volume himself. His wife Mary was also an amateur artist and, together, they passed on their artistic skills to their famous son, John Singer Sargent.
