Atlas of Canada

Department of the Interior, Canada

Regular price $100.00 Sale

The first edition of the "Atlas of Canada" was published in 1906, followed by four additional printed volumes. This second edition reflects a time when Canada's economy was based largely on agriculture, minerals and forest products. Immigrants were opening up the prairies and our national economic well-being depended on the existence of an adequate rail transportation system. This is why we see here a particular interest in transportation and communications and a significant amount of space devoted to mapping the composition and density of the population. Unusual maps include telegraph and railway lines, isotherms, geology, minerals, drainage basins, and population origins and density. Diagrams show marine light stations, population, trade and commerce, agriculture, vital statistics, finance, fisheries, railways, education, and immigrants. The sixth edition of the atlas was launched on the internet, being one of the first electronic online atlases in the world. In 2006, the "Atlas of Canada" celebrated 100 years of map making.
