Tomus Prior et Tomus Posterior." Johan Ihre (1707-1780) was a Swedish philologist and historical linguist who worked as Professor of Rhetoric and Politics at the University of Uppsala. This is the first comprehensive dictionary of Swedish, though its definitions are in Latin. Ihre demonstrated the origin of words in Old Swedish forms and compared them to cognates in other languages. In accordance with the historical speculations common at the time and derived from Icelandic sources, Ihre thought that the language had been brought to the Nordic countries by Odin himself.
