Walter Shanly (1819-1899) was a Canadian civil engineer, author, businessman, and politician, remembered for his work on railways and canals. Although overshadowed by his brother Francis, Walter was a vital agent in the professionalization of civil engineering in Canada. The Walter Shanly award is the most important award of the Construction Division of Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. This report is about a proposed canal from Montreal to Lake Huron via the Ottawa and French rivers.
