Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) wrote this book as a report on his expedition to open Japan from 1852-54 with the assistance of Episcopal Bishop Francis Lister Hawkes (1798-1866). The book was prepared after Perry returned from his mission and was retired as rear admiral by the book's publication.
