GIFFORD, E.
Title continues: "With a Complete History of Recent Events, in Silesia, Prussia, Bohemia, and in the Territories bordering on the Rhine, Developing the Causes and Appreciating the Consequences of the Studpendous Occurences, Together with interesting Descriptive and Historical Plates; and Illustrated by Professional and Biographical Anecdotes, of Cotemporary Leading Characters." This two-volume account of the life and military career of Napoleon ends with the Emperor's forced abdication and exile on Elba. The "Address" in Vol. I begins, "How changed, within these few short weeks, are the prospects of the Invincible Napoleon..." Therefore, though the frontispiece of Vol. I is dated 1813 in small print, the volumes were likely printed in 1814, a short time after the defeat of the Emperor. Napoleon, of course, escaped from Elba, but, after the Hundred Days, he was defeated at Waterloo and exiled again to a far more isolated spot, the remote island of Saint Helena. Note the bookplate for Sir Joseph Radcliffe; this baronetcy was created in November 1813 as a reward to Radcliffe for his public service.
