Colley Cibber (1671-1757) was not only a playwright of twenty-five works but an actor-manager with his own troupe, responsible for running his own theatre business. Cibber was not well respected among his peers. Alexander Pope made him the head Dunce in his epic satire, The Dunciad (1728). First performed in 1704, The Careless Husband follows the exploits of a Libertine who is perpetually unfaithful to his wedding vows and is discovered by his devoted wife.
