RYERSON, Rev. John
An older brother of educator Egerton Ryerson, John Ryerson (1800-1878) undertook a perilous missionary journey to Hudson Bay in his 55th year. Starting in Sault Ste. Marie, his expedition went to Hudson Bay via Red River and from there to England. His published account furnishes the most accurate and reliable description of this early trade route. The expedition was made with the view of the Canadian Methodist Church beginning missionary activity in the area. Ryerson describes the promise of this land and, in contrast to some other writers of the period, looks ahead to its settlement and development with confident enthusiasm.
