A Philosophical, Historical, and Moral Essay on Old Maids. By A Friend to the Sisterhood
William Hayley (1745-1820) was an English writer, now best known as the friend and biographer of William Cowper. He has been described as "a man who went round looking after mad poets and artists." Though modern women may find this three-volume essay on "old maids" rather condescending, Hayley's true goal was to document the plight of girls who remained unmarried and to urge sympathy and understanding for impoverished gentlewomen.
