An Index to the Remarkable Passages and Words made use of by Shakespeare

AYSCOUGH, Rev. Samuel

Regular price $100.00 Sale

The first concordance to Shakespeare's works ever published. Ayscough was a librarian and indexer known as the "Prince of Indexers." A cataloguer in the British Museum in the 18th century, he accumulated over 20,000 pieces of paper cataloguing their manuscripts. He died in 1804, very fittingly in the museum in which he'd spent so much time. The unusual page numbering stems from this concordance being published as a supplement to Stockdale's two-volume works of Shakespeare.
