Born in Harbour Deep, Grandfather Dad and Grandmother Mom marry and move to the "meadows" where they built a homestead and clear the land. Grandfather, however, is more than a little rough around the edges. Johnston writes with a sombre and ironic wisdom about the dark side of the nuclear family and the corrosive effects of poverty on the working class.
