v, 49 p. 17 cm. 3 b&w plates + three heads. Paper covers with moderate soiling and chipped spine tail. Former owner's label attached to first page. Some staining. Political tract by Charles Dickens originally published in 1836. The House of Commons had thrown out by small majority a bill presented by Sir Andrew Agnew, M.P., advocating the enforcement of more rigid laws respecting Sunday observance. Dickens resents these proposals on the grounds that the new laws would press far more heavily upon the poor than upon the rich. He earnestly pleads for the encouragement of Sabbath excursions and harmless Sunday amusements.
