Introduction by E. Schaeffer. Text in English and Portuguese. Albert Eckhout was a Dutch painter best known for his portraits and still lifes. He was among the first European artists to paint scenes from the New World when he visited Dutch Brazil in the 1630s. The identification of the birds in this volume was undertaken by Dr. Helmut Sick, a German-born ornithologist who led scientific expeditions to remote areas of Brazil to describe several species of birds.
