Arthur Ransome (1884 - 1967) was an English author and journalist, best known for writing this Swallows and Amazons series of children's books. The books tell of school-holiday adventures of children, mostly in the Lake District of England. Though most of the books featured sailing, the action in "Pigeon Post" is restricted to the lakes. It won the first Carnegie Medal awarded for children's literature.
