Title continues: "Comprehending an Account of the Mythology, Cosmogony, Fasts, and Festivals, of the Gentoos, Followers of the Shastah. With a Dissertation on the Metempsychosis, commonly, though erroneously, called the Pythagorean Doctrine." The surgeon John Zepahniah Howell (1711-1798) was an employee of the English East India Company who became a temporary governor of Bengal in 1760. He was one of the first Europeans to study Indian antiquities, also writing Interesting Historical Events Relative to the Provinces of Bengal (1766). He used his medical training to prepare An Account of the Manner of Inoculating for the Small Pox in the East Indies (1767). He was also a survivor of the so-called Black Hole of Calcutta in June 1756, an incident in which some British and others were crammed into a small poorly-ventilated dungeon overnight, resulting in many deaths from suffocation. Howell's account of this incident (1758) has been questioned by historians, but his write-up may have gained support for the East India Company's conquest of India.
