Regular price $2,000.00 Sale

Owen Manning completed this work after Lye died in 1767. Lye had been at work on this Saxon dictionary since 1737 but only about 30 sheets were published before his death. Manning made a few additions to the work and published it himself. Appendix includes fragments of Ulphilas' Gothic version of the Epistle of Paul to the Romans, the Anglo Saxon Charters, and fragments from the Saxon Chronicle. List of subscribers appears to include Robert Adam, Samuel Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith, Joshua Reynolds, and Jacob Tonson of the publishing family. Note there was a "Rev. Samuel Johnson" in British North America who became first president of Columbia University.
