The Encyclopdie was published in France between 1751 and 1772, with later supplements, revised editions, and translations. Edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, the Encyclopdie is famous above all for representing the thought of the Enlightenment. The plates were an important part of disseminating the new scientific ideas of the age. Here are the fabulous anatomical drawings, architectural plans, tool illustrations, world maps, animals and plants that summarize knowledge as it was at the time. A philosophical skeleton appears on p. 90 and an almost accurate map of Canada on pp. 3050-3051.
