Watts drove his parents up the wall with his habit of rhyming and verse, to the point of having reputedly used it to convince his father to halt in the application of corporal punishment for having used a rhyme to explain a transgression. Coming from a non-conformist family and therefore denied a public education, Watts obtained his education through the Dissenting Academy before going on to become a famous poet and writer on logic and theology.
