Set in 19th-century Mississippi, Absalom, Absalom! is considered by many to be William Faulkner's masterpiece. Faulkner himelf said immodestly, I think it's the best novel yet written by an American. Although the story's complex and fragmented structure makes it a little daunting for some, it was one of the reasons, along with The Sound and the Fury, that Faulkner won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949.
