Title continues: "versus John F. A. Sandford, December Term, 1856. By Benjamin C. Howard, Counsellor at Law and Reporter of the Decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States." The Dred Scott case was one of the sparks that ignited the American Civil War. The U.S. Supreme Court determined that the Constitution was not intended to include citizenship for Africans such as Scott. The book includes a statement of the case and the opinions of the justices. The last two opinions, that of Justices McLean and Curtis, argued in favour of Scott's freedom. Unfortunately, the Court's decision was 7-2 in favour of his return to slavery. Sabin 33240.
