Philip Miller became director of the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1722 and remained in office until 1770. During his directorship, Chelsea became the world's most richly stocked botanical garden. He successfully introduced exotic plants to Britain, conducted experiments on fertilization, and noticed the role of insects in pollination. His first gardener's dictionary appeared in 1724 and became the standard horticultural reference work of the 18th century, translated into a number of languages. This seventh edition uses the Linnean system of nomenclature, Miller having had extensive correspondence with Linnaeus. Rear of volume 2 has index in Latin and English and catalogues of plants in open air, plants requiring artificial heat in winter, medicinal plants, medicinal trees.
