"Giving an impartial account to the Divan at Constantinople, of the most remarkable transactions of Europe: and discovering several intrigues and secrets of the Christian courts (especially of that of France). Continued from the Year 1637, to the year 1682. Written originally in "ARABICK," translated into Italian, from thence into English, and now published with a large historical preface and index to illustrate the whole, by the translator of the first volume." Presented as a work of historical fact by the author of volume 1, Giovanni Paulo Marana (1642-93), a political refugee in the French Court from Genoa. To keep publishing further volumes, Robert Midgley, who owned the copyright worked with translator William Bradshaw to make the first English language edition in 1687. The first set of letters, volume 1, was first released from 1684-86. While authorship for the remaining volumes is unclear, it is likely Marana, Bradshaw, and Midgley all had a hand in its preparation.

Incomplete set. Missing volume 7 of the 8 vol. set). xvii, [4], viii, [10], 312p; [24], 276p; [22], 263p; [22], 287p; [18], 257p; [22], 241p; [18], 280p. 18 cm full leather bindings. Ex-library with bookplates and labels on endpapers. Leather bindings impressed with the label "Quebec Library" on the front boards. Front board detached from vols. 1, 3. & 8. Vol. 5 bound upside down. Vol. 6 boards loose but still attached with leather cracked along hinges and parts torn off of the back board. Some damage to endpaper but text pages clean and unmarked. Sold "as-is."
